WHAT IS PHOSPHATE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Phosphate is a naturally occurring, resource that was deposited across Florida when the state was submerged below the ocean millions of years ago.
Florida’s rich phosphate deposits are a vital link in the world’s food chain and a key ingredient in crop nutrients. Florida phosphate mining began in 1883, and accounts for a quarter of the global phosphate supply, and nearly three quarters of all phosphate mined in the United States annually.
Phosphate is a nutrient vital to all living things and is found naturally in our food, our water, and our bodies. Phosphate is used in the production of fertilizer and feed supplements, soft drinks, and even toothpaste to name a few. Simply put, phosphate is a naturally-occurring part of our everyday lives.
