HPS II PHOSPHATE MINING PROJECT
Welcome! We’re glad you are here to learn more about the HPS II phosphate mining project. Here you will find helpful background information and answers to many of your questions concerning phosphate mining in Bradford and Union Counties.
In a message to the United States Congress in 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt underscored the importance of phosphate to agriculture and people:
“The phosphorus content of our land, following generations of cultivation, has greatly diminished. It needs replenishing. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of phosphorus not only to agriculture and soil conservation but also the physical health and economic security of the people of the nation. Many of our soil deposits are deficient in phosphorus, thus causing low yield and poor quality of crops and pastures…”
The same is true today as intensive agriculture increases the yield per acre by extracting essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) and moving them into the crops which feed an ever-growing population.
HPS Enterprises is pleased to announce the commencement of the planning and permitting phase of the HPS II phosphate mining project. The company understands the need for agricultural development which is the driving factor for the project. The world population is expected to grow to 8 billion in 2020, and several developing countries will face major challenges in achieving food growth security. The need to enhance farming practices and increase food production will become necessary and phosphate mining will help feed billions of people across the globe.
We are excited about this project, including the jobs and opportunities it will bring to our local communities. We will continue to share information with you as the project continues.
